WHAT IS MUSIC THERAPY?
Music therapy is a research-based, allied health profession. Music therapists use all types of musical methods to support the physical, social, and emotional needs of the people they work with.
Physical support through music therapy could look like the playing of various instruments to help with coordination and motor skill development, the incorporation of dance and movement, or finding or making music to help with daily activities (playlists or songs) to name a few.
Emotional support could look like singing songs or listening to music that is meaningful to the individual to accompany or alter moods, or writing and improvising music in order to support processing of events or thought processes.
Social support may look like group music making, or developing a meaningful relationship with the therapist. Social support may include, but is not limited to, supporting communication skills, growing interpersonal capacities or processing of relationships.
